America’s Pet-Friendly Vacation Cities

As we get closer to the summer travel season, it’s time to lock plans into place and for many people that includes planning to take their pet along on vacation.

Priceline.com recently announced what the travel website deemed to be America’s most pet-friendly cities. The cities featured were ranked in terms of their number of pet-friendly hotels, off-leash dog parks and their general layout for great walks and hikes. Here’s the Priceline list:

  • Albuquerque, NM
  • Portland, OR
  • Tucson, AZ
  • Tampa, FL
  • Indianapolis, IN
  • Salt Lake City, UT
  • Austin, TX
  • Tulsa, OK
  • Louisville, KY
  • San Francisco, CA

While an interesting list, especially for those traveling and needing pet-friendly hotels, these specifications are just a start. Another important factor to consider in terms of a city’s friendliness is the possibility of pet-friendly restaurants, too. This is an important criterion whether you are on a ‘staycation’ in your home city or traveling. Fortunately, the number of restaurants around the country that offer patio dining facilities which include pets is growing.

If you are planning to take your pooch on vacation, finding a pet-friendly hotel is obviously the first thing to lock in place on your “To Find” list. Often such establishments also offer pet parents lists of pet facilities in their area, which will include everything from dog parks to dog beaches to a grooming salon. Think of it as concierge service for pets!

It’s also important to establish what pet sitting arrangements can be made because there will be occasions when it simply won’t be possible to take your pet. Often hotels are uncomfortable about have pet guests left unattended in a room. A pet sitter is the perfect solution.

Something else to consider is researching day care facilities in the area where you are planning to vacation as many such establishments offer day camps for dogs. This is a great alternative to keep your pet busy while you are touring places that may not be too pet friendly. This way your dog can have a fun day, too. After all, vacation should be an adventure for everyone who goes.
