Mother/Daughter Duo Team Up to Save Pets

Editor’s Note: This touching success story was submitted to PetSmart Charities and their Rescue Waggin’ Program. Sergeant’s Pet Care Products is a proud sponsor of this this life-changing program. As a sponsor, Sergeant’s is actively involved in helping the Rescue Waggin’ save the lives of homeless dogs and puppies around the country.

It’s important to recognize and appreciate the endless sacrifices of mothers worldwide. Staci Rudersdorf has a special relationship with her mom, thanks in part to their shared passion for pets.

Staci and her mother, Linda, spend 8 to 12 hours per day together on the road transporting dogs and puppies through the PetSmart Charities Rescue Waggin’ program. The dogs on board the Rescue Waggin’ vehicle are given the rides of their lives from shelters where they have little chance of being adopted, to shelters where they’re usually adopted within 72 hours of arriving.

Staci has been a part of the program for seven years; Linda for three. Linda was a driver her entire career — even driving an 84-passenger school bus while her kids were young. She began filling in as a Rescue Waggin’ driver after she retired. In no time, she landed a full-time position with Staci by her side showing her the ropes.

Together, they drive 10,000 to 13,000 miles each month and transport up to 300 dogs on their way to forever homes. Both ladies enjoy the special bond that comes from spending long hours together on the road. “Stace and I are a lot alike in many ways,” says Linda. “Since we work together in such close quarters, we’ve learned to accept each other for who we are.”

A typical day starts with pre-trip paperwork and inspection of their truck. Staci does most of the driving, but Linda usually takes a turn at the wheel to give her a break. Linda always checks a map, while Staci relies on her GPS. And believe it or not, there’s rarely any fighting over the radio. Occasionally, they’ll turn on an NPR station, but they’re quick to point out that their first priority is always the precious cargo on board!

The list of what they like most about their jobs is long, but both ladies credit the volunteers at the shelters and the foster families who give of their time to save the lives of so many pets each year. And, of course, they love to meet and greet the dogs and give them hugs as they load them in their kennels in preparation for their life-saving journey.

Staci says, Rescue Waggin’ is an amazing program and it’s incredible to work with so many dedicated individuals throughout the country.”

Away from the barking, the duo still likes to talk about the dogs, but they also love to shop, travel, and catch the latest movies together.

The Rescue Waggin’ Program is proudly sponsored by Sergeant’s.
