Today’s National Dog Day!

It’s National Dog Day!

Today is the day to celebrate the many miraculous ways dogs impact our lives! It’s National Dog Day! Founded in 2004, National Dog Day was created by pet lifestyle expert, Colleen Paige, to recognize the great bond between humans and dogs and to encourage people to show appreciation for all they do for us. From law enforcement dogs to service dogs, from search and rescue to comfort dogs, they enhance our lives and often save our lives.

National Dog Day encourages shelter adoption and commemorates the millions of dogs that are euthanized because they can’t find homes. It advocates against “Breed Bans” and stands for all dogs living a “happy, safe and abuse-free life.” Colleen Paige states it simply, “ In every heart there is an empty space… in every shelter… there is love in which to fill it.”

She encourages everyone, even those who are not dog guardians, to donate $5 to their local shelter today. I Pawsitively Love This! In my life I know that dogs are healers and if we listen to them carefully, they can be teachers as well. They show us how to connect on a deep level and so, in the process, remind us to reconnect with ourselves.

Super Smiley here dog blogging now, and in my heart, I know National Dog Day is super important! All my pack mates are rescues and we know for sure that there are amazing animals in shelters who go on to uplift and complete families. They lower people’s blood pressure and increase their “happy chemicals!” People who care-take dogs live longer! Shelter dogs also can go on to enhance people’s lives as service and therapy dogs and help to save lives as search and rescue and war dogs. I know this personally because I’m the National Spokes-Dog for the American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards!

These Hero Dogs are very very special, and… I know in my heart that all dogs are heroes. When you look down into the eyes of your dog, you are looking at your personal Hero Dog. When you rescue us, we rescue you right back. When you celebrate us, we celebrate right beside you. We will pay back your kindness ’til our last breath and then, still, we will be waiting for you at Rainbow Bridge.

The Hero Dog Awards honor dogs who help people in true life-and-death situations as military, law enforcement, search and rescue and arson Dogs. They also recognize dogs that help special people navigate life as service, hearing, guide and therapy dogs.

Thank you, Colleen, for creating National Dog Day to remind people of our deep connection and bond. From head to toe, in body and spirit, celebrate your dog today!

Happy National Dog Day from Megan and Super Smiley!
