10 Ways to Celebrate National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week!

Super Smiley here with the Pawsome News that Nov. 2-8 is National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week! I’m a two-time shelter dog, so I’m super waggin’ to celebrate, because shelters saved my life!

This special week was founded by the Humane Society of the U.S. in 1996 to encourage people to get acquainted with their local shelters and to reach out and get involved. It recognizes all the amazing people who help care for animals in shelters and all of the wonderful animals in shelters waiting to be adopted! Each year, 6-8 million homeless pets go through approximately 3,500 shelters in the U.S. There are lots of things you can do to celebrate and to help the shelter that’s right in your own hometown. Here are my top five:

  1. Volunteer at your shelter to help train a dog. A simple sit/stay with a cute “look at me” can open hearts and homes to these beautiful pets. Training dogs is so fun and can literally save lives!
  2. Organize a pack walk! It can be as simple as asking your dog lovin’ friends to go on a walk and each of you donate $10 to your shelter. Ten people add up to $100! You can even post flyers and see what happens!
  3. Have a party and ask your people friends to bring supplies like blankets, dog food and cat litter for your shelter. You can call your shelter first to see what’s tops on their wish list.
  4. Cats are people, too! Volunteer to play with the kitties! Cats need to be socialized and kept happy just like the dogs, and this kitty time may be right up your alley.
  5. My very favorite: Adopt a pet! But first look at your lifestyle and research the time, attention and resources needed for your new pet before you make the commitment. Then go to your shelter and bring home your perfect pet match.

Good job, Smiley! It’s me, Megan, here now with five more ways to celebrate and participate during National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week:

  1. A super easy way is to take a photo of your adopted pet and share it on your social media with an encouraging word about pet adoption and how people can support their local shelter.
  2. Take your mission to work and ask co-workers to donate their spare change or a portion of that week’s sales or tips to your shelter. Make it a celebration and deliver the goods as a group in person!
  3. Let your shelter know about your personal skills. They may need exactly what you have to offer. Maybe they need some plumbing fixed, a flyer created or someone good with a hammer. You may be just the one they are looking for!
  4. Support your local shelter by “liking” and following their social media pages, sharing your pet’s photo and saying “Thank You” for all they do!
  5. Share some resources: There are fabulous ideas out there for those looking to adopt. The ASPCA has a fun and wonderful guide to finding your perfect pet match with Canine-ality™ and Feline-ality™ matchmaking tests.

Also, the Shelter Project created by HSUS is an amazing program that shares the joys of pet adoption and may also help you find your perfect pet.

Do you kitty lovers want to gift a great item to your shelter and don’t know what to pick? A toenail clipper is a great donation! Purrfect! You can always donate delicious treats to your shelter — the dogs and trainers thank you! Maybe you want to spruce up your new dog’s smile? Try a dental care kit that whitens, brightens and helps keep his teeth and gums healthy.

Until Next Time, Woof and Super Smiles from,
