Super Smiley’s Top 10 on Walk The Dog Day

Super Smiley, blog dog, here. Dogs love to walk, so I am super excited about Walk The Dog Day! There are so many reasons and ways to walk and we dogs help our people with every one of them!

  1. Walk for relaxation and to reconnect with yourself. We dogs are very good at helping our people get grounded and reconnected. I just interviewed actor Mark Freuerstein, star of “Royal Pains,” and he told me that when he walks his dog, it’s like a meditation. Pawsome!
  2. Walk to exercise — this can be on flat terrain, but also up hills and in the surf. Walking in shallow water becomes a resistance exercise and, at the same time, is sooo refreshing.
  3. Walk with friends to get out and socialize and breathe the fresh air. Dogs help people connect. So even if your friends can’t walk with you, your dog may introduce you to a new friend.  We’re just like that.
  4. Interspecies walking. We’re already doing it with humans and dogs, so if we can bring someone else along like a pig or a horse, go for it!
  5. Walk with other trained dogs to practice obedience with the distraction of other dogs working nearby.
  6. Walk with groups to raise money for causes, like pet adoption.
  7. Sometimes these walks for causes can be part of National Events with lots of people and lots of dogs like Strut Your Mutt! These walks get 4 Paws Up!
  8. Walk to explore and see new things. These walks can be along city streets or way out in the wilderness.
  9. Go for a hike! Go for a long walk with a picnic and blankets to rest on.
  10. Walk on a camping expedition. I walked across New England with Megan! We were raising awareness for pet adoption and were guests on local radio stations as we crossed. So we turned our walk into a mini mission!

Even special needs dogs and seniors love to get out, and now there are so many ways to bring them along. You can use a baby stroller or a wagon or special strollers made for pets. On Walk Your Dog Day no one should stay home!

On Feb. 22, I’ll be walkin’!

Super Smiley, that’s a great top 10 dog walking list! Megan here now with a little more. Smiley and I will be out walking, and it would be so fun for all of us to post photos of our walks and see if we can add to Super Smiley’s list. I thought of two fun things we can do for Walk Your Dog Day:

  1. We could get a group of friends together and each person make a small donation that you all then take to your local shelter or rescue.
  2. Another idea is to create a Walk Your Dog Day Get Together complete with a Red Carpet. Your guests can take photos of your dogs walking the Red Carpet!

Super Smiley and I would love to hear your ideas and see pictures of what you did. You can comment and post your pictures on the PHC blog or on Pet Health Central’s Facebook page.

If we don’t see you in person, we look forward to seeing your posts on Walk Your Dog Day!
