Ideas for Night Walking with Your Dog

For many people, the first opportunity to take their dog for a long walk is after their workday is over, and often, it’s later in the evening, after dinner.

Depending on the time of year, it can be dark by the time you venture out the front door.

The most important consideration for after-dark excursions is to ensure that that both you and are dog are clearly visible at night. Fortunately, there are lots of reflective collars and leashes as well accessories that flash to alert other pedestrians and drivers of your presence.

The latest retractable leashes also have a flashlight accessory, which can be very helpful when walking to light up the surface area to ensure that you are both stepping on safe ground.

Setting out at night can be chilly, too. So if you are putting on an additional layer of clothing, it’s a good idea to ensure your dog is warm as well, whether it’s a light T-shirt or a thick padded coat. Look for garments that also have reflective ribbons as part of the design. A raincoat is also a good idea to keep your pet dry during inclement weather. In addition, reversible coats are an excellent investment to take care of a variety of weather conditions. Not to mention booties, which are a great way to ensure that you don’t have to clean muddy paws on your return home either.

Depending on where you live and where you walk, it’s important to be prepared to deal with other “creatures of the night” such as coyotes, raccoons and even squirrels. It’ a good idea to walk carrying a stick and even a can of pepper spray. And it goes without saying; never leave home without your cell phone.

If you are lucky enough to live in a city that has a pet-friendly indoor mall, this is a really great venue to walk your dog at night. Even if you have to drive to the location, once there, you are out of the weather and in a well-lit environment. You can walk the same distance you’d normally undertake by going several times around the different levels.

Besides, it’s fun to be a “mall rat” after dark. It’s a great opportunity to window shop and enjoy the “commercial scenery.”
