“Mutt” Super Smiley on May Day for Mutts!

Super Smiley, blog dog here, and I’m a mutt with the scoop that May Day for Mutts is the most wonderful celebration ever!

Created by Karen Derrico the author of “Unforgettable Mutts: Pure of Heart Not of Breed,” May Day for Mutts is officially the first Sunday of May, but really goes through the whole month! So, it’s not just a one-day May “Day,” but it’s also a “mayday” call to help!

37 May Day 2We all can help celebrate and spread the message to share the greatness of mutts, to help find them families and to end discrimination against mixed-breed dogs. And speaking of discrimination, did you know that a black dog is much less likely to be adopted than a dog with color? And senior dogs may be overlooked altogether! So May Day for Mutts not only celebrates mutts, but also celebrates the special qualities senior dogs bring and how even dogs with disabilities and special needs can add soooo much to a family.

We mutts welcome everybody! We don’t discriminate, so our May Day for Mutts is all about sharing what we already know. Mutts rock and it’s what’s inside that counts: The heart, the spirit…and the super smile.

Good job, Super Smiley! It’s Megan here now with some of the specifics! May Day for Mutts involves shelters, rescues and pet businesses across the country hosting events, celebrations and adoption specials. Some are even hosting “Cinco De Meow Day” to help the kitties! Many shelters are offering goodies like reduced adoption fees, coupons to participating restaurants and “100 percent Pure Mutt” certificates.

To find a May Day for Mutts celebration near you, you can call your local shelter and rescue groups to see if they are hosting an event. And, Petfinder.com (the virtual home of 374,700 adoptable pets from 13,618 adoption groups) also lists some of the May Day for Mutts events across the country.

One of the things I love about these “event days” is that we as individuals can do so much! If you can’t find a May Day for Mutts event in your area, offer to help organize one for your shelter! Or to celebrate, you can host a May Day for Mutts event at your home! Host a Mutt play date, a pack walk or a friend’s volunteer day at the shelter. You could write an article for your local paper, or share our blog here to celebrate your mutt and to let people know about May Day for Mutts! Why? Because, to quote Super Smiley, “Mutts rock!”

Until Next Time,
Woof and Super Smiles from,
Super Smiley and Megan Blake, The Pet Lifestyle Coach®
