Let’s Celebrate the Human-Animal Bond: It’s National Pet Month!

I’m fairly certain I am preaching to the choir when I say that our lives change forever when a pet enters our home. We can also see the joy that pets express when they are with their loving owners.

National Pet Month is observed in May in the U.S. (and April in the U.K.) to highlight the prosperous relationship that humans have with pets and vice versa.

How do we celebrate this month-long occasion? Here are a few ideas:

  1. Do something together with your pet, whether it’s going on a walk with your dog or playing with a laser pointer at home with your cat. It will be great bonding time!
  2. Surprise your pet with a new toy.
  3. If your pet has a favorite activity, go do it! A swim, a hike or maybe just snuggling up on your lap. Be sure to spoil them!
  4. Does your pet have a favorite spot in the house? Make it more suited for them! This could mean making a window perch for your cat or adding a bed near a sunny window for your dog.
  5. If your pet is a service animal, be sure they get some break time to relax, even if it’s for a little bit. They deserve it after all the hard work they do!

While we are spoiling our pets at home, it’s important to also remember there are shelter pets waiting to find their loving new pet parents. There are so many ways we can help shelter pets:

  1. The obvious thing you can do with a shelter pet is ADOPT them if you share that special bond, and you’ll know if it’s there!
  2. If you’re unable to adopt, tell your friends and family about how great adoption is! Shelter pets are usually no different than pets you would get elsewhere and adoption can literally save lives.
  3. Volunteer at your local animal shelter or rescue. You can donate needed items, take pets out for a walk, and bring friends to join you. The pets will love the attention!

How do you let your pet know they are loved? Share in the comments!
