Celebrating the First National Therapy Animal Day

Super Smiley, blog dog here celebrating over a million Therapy Animal visits a year with the sweetest day around! May 18 marks the very first National Therapy Animal Day, and it’s being celebrated nationwide with the first Treats and Sweets Day!

Pet Partners is the leader of the pack for Therapy Animals as the nation’s largest and the original therapy animal organization. It was created in 1977 when Dr. Bill McCulloch, his veterinarian colleagues and his psychiatrist friend noticed that pets had a real and scientifically based positive effect on people. This was the start of the first human/animal bond studies. Soon after Dr. McCulloch created the Human/Animal Bond Task Force, the Delta Society was born, which is now known as Pet Partners. So he added science to what a lot of people know intuitively – that pets make people happy!

39-Therapy-2This year Pet Partners created the very first National Therapy Animals Day to celebrate the amazing therapy animals that provide over a million visits a year!

I’m a Pet Partners Therapy Dog! Along with the other 50,000 Pet Partners teams, I’ve visited children in hospitals, seniors in rehabs, patients quietly resting in hospice, Veterans and college students during exams looking for some super smiley distraction. That’s what therapy animals do. We may be dogs, cats, horses, bunnies or llamas. So, even though we each bring our own style, the message is the same. We are there to make people feel better and to give them a special gift in our visit.

Good Job Super Smiley! Megan here now, and like Smiley said, Therapy Dogs and Therapy Animals do such important work sharing love, a kind touch and a calming presence. Dr. Aubrey Fine, author of “Our Faithful Companions” and a Pet Partners Board Member, compares petting a dog to a biological spa treatment, in that petting a friendly animal can lower cortisol levels, heart rate and blood pressure. I like to say, “They increase our happy chemicals!”

And to celebrate the very first National Therapy Animal Day, Pet Partners has created Treats and Sweets Day! We all are invited to bake and participate in events and 39-Therapy-3Treats and Sweets bake sales across the country! Some pet lovin’ celebs are out to bake some treats and sweets too. David Mazouz, who plays Bruce Wayne in the new television series Gotham, and America’s Veterinarian Dr. Marty Becker are donning their chef hats along with Super Smiley and me! You can participate by signing up at TreatsAndSweetsDay.org and start baking! Create your own event to support therapy animal visits! Have a baking party, a pack walk, biscuits and brewskis, or a dog friendly picnic. The sky is the limit and the Therapy Visit rewards are limitless.

If you would like to consider certifying your pet as a therapy animal, both you and your pet will need to train and pass a series of tests. Information can be found at PetPartners.org. And, even if you don’t want to officially qualify as a Therapy Team, you can be sure that when you come home and pet your cat or dog, look into their eyes and feel better, you are visiting with your own personal Therapy Animal.

Until Next Time,
Woof and Super Smiles from,
Super Smiley and Megan Blake, The Pet Lifestyle Coach®
