Why Take Your Pet To Work Day is Pawsome!

Super Smiley, blog dog here, with the scoop that PSI’s Take Your Dog To Work Day is pawsome! Created by Pet Sitters International in 1999, the day serves two super important functions: to celebrate what great companions we dogs make and to encourage pet adoptions! Four paws up!

On this day, Friday, June 26, employers will welcome employees bringing their four-legged friends to work! This way everybody at the office gets to experience the joys of pets, support their local pet community, and (maybe the best of all) lets people without pets see for themselves how wonderful we pets are! So maybe after work, they’ll go adopt one, too!

Ask your employer about celebrating Take Your Pet To Work Day! I go to work with Megan, and it’s pawsome!

Thank you, Super Smiley! I think going to work with you is pawsome, too! It’s Megan here now with a little more info on Take Your Pet To Work Day. The debut day 17 years ago included an estimated 300 participating businesses. Since then, it’s been an annual event the Friday after Father’s Day and has been breaking all-time highs each year with thousands of businesses now participating.

And, to make sure Take Your Pet To Work Day is a good experience for everyone, Beth Stultz, marketing manager for Pet Sitters International, suggests that before the day, both the employers and employees check in to make sure no one has allergies or issues regarding pets. The pet visitors should be polite and socialized around people and other animals. There should also be designated areas where pets are and are not allowed. Each pet owner should bring food, water, and a toy to occupy their pet. A baby gate is also something to consider bringing for your pet for your personal office space. Waste bags are a great idea, too, for those outdoor breaks.

Cats and other pets can come to work too! Many year-round pet-friendly offices have observed that with the pets, employees are more relaxed, less stressed, have higher job satisfaction and work better together.

Studies have also indicated that pets at work may even increase employees’ team cohesion, trust and ethical behavior, and may even keep the employees healthier!

Take Your Pet To Work Day is great on so many levels. It’s fun, encourages adoption, and the pets love it. Employees enjoy work more and work better together. Employers have employees who are less stressed and more cohesive. And it’s all because of the pets!

Probably most of us who live with pets would say, “Of course! What did they expect?!”

Congratulations to Pet Sitters International on your great work and super idea! Super Smiley gives Take Your Pet To Work Day four paws up!

Until Next Time,
Woof and Super Smiles from
